Pastoral Care
A high level of pastoral care is provided for every child who attends The English School. Each child is assigned a Class Teacher (pre-KG to Year 5) or Tutor (Year 6-8). New children have a buddy whom they shadow for the first week or until they feel comfortable to become more independent.
Homework Diaries are used by pupils in Year 2-8 as a means of daily communication between teachers and parents. Class Teachers and Tutors are the first point of contact for parents if they have any concerns.
The school has adopted the Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning Programme (SEAL) which is taught through Circle Time and Personal Social Health and Emotional (PSHE) lessons but also pervades other areas of the curriculum. The Behaviour Management Policy, based primarily on positive reinforcement, is implemented fairly and consistently by teachers so that children have clear boundaries.
A House System operates whereby each child from Reception to Year 8 is assigned to one of the four Houses (Balmoral, Buckingham, Sandringham, Windsor). Children collect house points individually for good work etc and as a group e.g. at Sports Day. This fosters both a community spirit and healthy competition, as well as allowing children to mix with different age groups.
Children are encouraged to take on positions of responsibility within the school. A group of prefects from Year 7 & 8 are nominated by teachers and play an important role. In Year 3 to 8 each class elects a school council representative. This group of children lead small scale change to further improve the school and organise events to raise money for charity.
In both the Pre Prep and Prep schools there is a playground squad who assist the teachers on duty to ensure that break times run smoothly.
